Accounting Specialist

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage accounts payable, cash disbursements, deposits, invoicing, vendor records, and credit cards
  • Process bi-weekly payroll; serve as liaison with HR/payroll provider
  • Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual tax and compliance reports, including 1099s
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management and the Board and assist with analyzation of key data
  • Maintain general ledger, balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and bank reconciliations
  • Support budget tracking, management reports, audits, and account analysis
  • Maintain accounting systems, financial records, and purchase requisitions, including vendor management
  • Support HR functions including job postings and applicant tracking
  • Manage assigned insurance and receivable-related activities
  • Recommend and support accounting policies and internal controls, including identifying inefficiencies and recommending process improvements or systems.
  • Provide clear, timely financial information to non‑finance staff
  • Act as secondary finance contact in the absence of the VP of Finance
  • Adheres to Council and GSUSA policies, standards, procedures and Girl Scout Promise and Law
  • Supports and promotes the Council’s and GSUSA’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and pluralism
  • Other duties as assigned to reach the goals of the Council

Required Skills

  • Strong attention to detail, able to organize and prioritize working independently
  • Ability to organize work and implement procedures
  • Experience in accounting platforms (Abila MIP preferred)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Power Point, Word, and Excel
  • Exercise sound judgment in resolving discrepancies and escalating issues appropriately
  • Ability to apply finance best practices in a nonprofit environment
  • Team player who focuses on building relationships both internal and external to the organization
  • Flexible, highly focused, and disciplined, with the ability to perform effectively under pressure and manage fluctuating workloads
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance, or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Relevant experience may have been gained through nonprofit, governmental, education, or mission‑driven organizations
