Board President, Friends of the Payette Avalanche Center
Job Description: Board Member – President/Board Chair
Organization: Friends of the Payette Avalanche Center (FPAC)
Location: McCall, Idaho (or surrounding areas)
Position Type: Volunteer
About the Friends of the Payette Avalanche Center:
The Friends of the Payette Avalanche Center (FPAC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Payette Avalanche Center (PAC) in its mission to promote avalanche awareness, safety, and education in the backcountry. We aim to ensure that all users in the PAC forecast area have access to accurate and timely avalanche forecasts, resources for safe recreation, and impactful educational opportunities.
Role Overview:
We are seeking a passionate and experienced individual to join and lead our Board of Directors as President/Chair of the Board. As the leader of this board, you will help shape the future of avalanche safety and education and support the PAC by driving fundraising efforts and organizing engaging community events. FPAC is an all-volunteer organization with no paid Executive Director. The Board President therefore serves as both the chief governance leader and the primary volunteer executive — setting strategic direction, leading operations between board meetings, and serving as the organization's principal point of contact with the USFS, partner organizations, and the public. This is a working leadership role with a meaningful time investment, particularly during the winter season.
Responsibilities:
- Preside at all meetings of the Board of Directors, and, subject to the control of the Board of Directors, supervise and control the affairs of the FPAC and the activities of the officers.
- Have voice but shall vote only when necessary to break a tie in
all meetings of the Board of Directors or to achieve a quorum.
- Appoint the members of all standing and ad hoc committees with the
approval of the Board of Directors and serve as an ex officio member of all
Committees.
- Actively recruit qualified candidates to fill board vacancies, with an eye toward building a board with complementary skills (e.g., finance, legal, marketing, avalanche education, public lands policy). Seek legal counsel as needed, with the approval of the Board of Directors.
- Proactively identify and mentor a successor to ensure continuity of organizational knowledge and relationships.
- Sign, with any other officer of the FPAC authorized by the Board
of Directors, any deeds, mortgages, bonds, contracts and other instruments on
behalf of the FPAC that the Board of Directors has expressly authorized.
- Collaborate with board members to plan, organize, and execute fundraising and outreach events and campaigns.
- Collaborate with USFS and Board Members to develop and evaluate strategic goals and ensure they are being met.
- Work closely with USFS staff, particularly the PAC director, to ensure alignment of goals and objectives.
- Work closely with the Board Treasurer on budget management and to ensure annual tax reports are filed.
- Collaborate closely with the Director of Fundraising on grant applications and to align fundraising efforts with current and projected needs.
- File annual USFS project reports, update Partner agreements and MOUs as needed.
- Build relationships with stakeholders, agencies and other organizations to support the goals of FPAC.
- Serve as FPAC's primary public spokesperson, and promote the Friends of the PAC mission through outreach and public engagement activities.
- Interface with other avalanche centers and Friends groups as needed
- Participate in American Avalanche Association working groups as needed.
Governing Responsibilities:
- Duty of Care: Make informed, diligent decisions on behalf of the organization; review financial statements, the annual 990, and material contracts before acting.
- Duty of Loyalty: Act in the best interests of FPAC at all times; disclose and recuse from any matter involving a personal or professional conflict of interest.
- Duty of Obedience: Ensure the organization remains faithful to its mission and operates in compliance with its bylaws, state nonprofit law, and IRS requirements for 501(c)(3) organizations.
- Ensure the board maintains and adheres to a current conflict of interest policy. Require annual disclosure from all board members and recuse any member — including themselves — from votes where a conflict exists.
Qualifications:
- Passion for backcountry safety, avalanche awareness, and outdoor recreation.
- Experience in non-profit or business leadership, fundraising, or prior non-profit work is highly preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational, and networking skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Commitment to attend board meetings and actively contribute to organizational goals.
- Desire to serve all winter recreation travel user groups including motorized and non-motorized.
Time Commitment:
- As much as 20-30 hours per winter month, depending on events and initiatives. Less during summer months.
- Attendance at monthly board meetings.
- Attendance at majority of public outreach events
- Attendance at the McCall Ranger District Winter Recreation Forum (Oct-April)
- Meet with USFS staff as needed.
Benefits:
- Make a meaningful impact on avalanche safety and backcountry recreation.
- Connect with a passionate community of outdoor enthusiasts and professionals.
- Gain valuable experience in nonprofit leadership and fundraising.
- Access to VIP pricing on gear.
